Which size do I need?
- Twin (38 × 75 in) is the single bed: children's rooms, bunk beds, guest rooms. Twin XL adds 5 inches of length for tall sleepers.
- Full (54 × 75 in), also called double, suits one adult with room to spread, or a small room where a queen will not fit.
- Queen (60 × 80 in) is the most common size for couples and the usual choice for a main bedroom.
- King (76 × 80 in) is as wide as two twin XLs side by side; California king (72 × 84 in) trades width for length.
Measure the room, not just the bed
Leave at least 24 inches (60 cm) of walkway on each side you get out of, and check that the bedroom door and hallway can take the mattress and the foundation. A queen box spring often comes split in two for exactly this reason.
Sheets and frames
Sheets are sold by these same names, so a queen mattress takes queen sheets. A frame or foundation must match the mattress size and support it fully across the middle.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between full and double?
Nothing: they are two names for the same 54 × 75 inch mattress.
Is a king the same as two twins?
A king (76 × 80 in) is the same as two twin XLs (38 × 80 in each) side by side, which is why split kings exist.
What size is a queen mattress in cm?
About 152 × 203 cm.
